Athan is a call-to-prayer app by Beckah Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy explains what the app collects and how it is used. We collect only what the app needs to work, and we do not sell your data.
What we collect
- Phone number — to create and sign in to your account (via Firebase phone authentication).
- Profile you provide — your name, and optionally a city, photo, and (for a muathin) masjid name and details.
- Location — used on your device to calculate accurate prayer times, the Qibla direction, and local weather. A muathin may also save the masjid's location to anchor community verification. Location is used for these features and is not sold.
- Microphone — only while a muathin is actively broadcasting the live adhan. The app does not record or listen in the background.
- Notification token — to send prayer/broadcast and announcement notifications you opt into.
How your information is used
- To provide prayer times, Qibla, weather, the live adhan, the masjid display, and notifications.
- To let listeners follow a muathin and to support community verification of a muathin.
Where it is stored
Account and app data are stored using Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Storage). The public masjid display reads only non-personal information (masjid name, city, prayer settings, messages) — never your phone number, email, or notification token.
Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Information is shared only with infrastructure providers (e.g. Google Firebase, and Agora for live audio) needed to run the service, and as required by law.
Your choices
- You can edit your profile, manage notification preferences, and stop following a muathin in the app.
- You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us.
Children
Athan is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13.
